Ants
Ant Season:
Spring / SummerIdentifying Ants
The most common type of ant you will likely come across is the Black Garden Ant. The ant's body consists of 3 main parts: the head, thorax & abdomen. On the head you will find two antennae. The Black Garden Ant's colouring is very dark brown despite its name. Worker ants are typically 3 to 5mm in length. When you identify ants on the move they will likely be foraging for food which they take back to the nest and feed to the queen ant and larvae. Winged mating ants, or flying ants, become prevalent during July and August as they seek out mates. The female flying ant will nest down for the winter and the following spring will lay her eggs creating the next generation of ants.
